This work was composed as a companion to the Debussy Études, and was commissioned by pianist Woori Kim. Just as each of Debussy’s remarkable essays focuses on a specific pianistic technical problem, étude – pour les symétries works with an aspect of the instrument and the instrumentalist that Debussy hadn’t chosen: the symmetries of both the keyboard and the two human hands. Thus, étude – pour les symétries is a completely symmetrical work, revolving around the very middle notes of the keyboard. Although the piece was not composed in the Debussy idiom, it does make brief references to a couple of his piano works.
