This work was commissioned by Chinese flute virtuoso Zhang Weiliang (张维良) as part of a series of compositions based on 五行 (wǔxíng), the set of five basic elements (fire, wood water, metal, earth) in Chinese traditional culture. As the title suggests, this is the piece that revolves around the element fire. It is scored for solo xiāo ( 箫) – Chinese vertical flute) with a large ensemble of Chinese traditional wind, plucked string and bowed string instruments, plus vibraphone and viola.
